WORLD PETROLEUM COUNCIL - YOUTH COMMITTEE
YOUTH: DESIGNING A SUSTAINABLE
FUTURE
History of the WPC Youth Committee
Some of the qualities young people offer, such as active
thinking, sensitivity to new issues and their powerful
innovative potential, are vitally important to the future
of the petroleum industry.
The World Petroleum Council, aware of the importance
of providing young professionals and students with the
significant role they deserve, promoted the 1st Youth
Forum, the first activity in which young people have
played a leading role in the WPC’s 75-year history.
This event was held in Beijing from 17-20 October
2004 under the theme “Youth and Innovation – the Future of the Petroleum Industry”. The Forum was an
overwhelming success and won widespread acclaim
from its participants. Since then, young professionals
and students have been on the World Petroleum
Council’s agenda as one of its most significant, foremost
topics, laying the foundations for international
exchange and cooperation in the future.
On the 8th and 9th of January 2007, seventeen members
chosen by the WPC’s National Committees met in
Madrid to create the World Petroleum Council’s Youth Committee, basing their organisation on the following
principals:
Vision
• Youth engaged in the petroleum industry to design
a sustainable future
Mission
• To create and nurture a collaborative, global forum
for young people to be heard
• To champion new ideas within the petroleum
industry
• To promote a realistic image of the petroleum
industry, its challenges and opportunities
• To bridge the generation gap through mentorship
networks
Values
• Transparency
• Integrity
• Diversity
• Social responsibility
• Environmental stewardship
• Technological innovation
• Long term thinking
The Committee is actively engaged in contributing
to the 19th World Petroleum Congress and is playing
a crucial role by putting together the wide range of
interesting youth activities which make up the Youth
Programme.
The 19th World Petroleum Congress Youth Programme
For the first time in the history of the WPC, young
professionals and students who are interested in
actively participating in the oil and gas industry, will
find a space in which they will be able to express their
opinions, meet other professionals from the industry
and share viewpoints with senior representatives of the
petroleum sector and top executives from the world’s
leading oil and gas companies.
This Youth Programme, sponsored by Nexen, will also
provide a platform for young people from all parts of
the world to demonstrate their skills while creating an
opportunity for petroleum industry management to
find and select the industry professionals of the future.
All these activities will provide a perfect opportunity for
Young People to stand out and be considered for what
they are, a key element in the oil and gas industry, the
future.
